Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are very common in the United States. In fact, the U.S. has the highest rate of STDs in the world. Two-thirds of all STDs occur in teenagers and young adults under the age of 25. One out of four sexually active teenagers will get an STD before turning 21. STDs spread from one person to another during sex (genital, anal or oral) and by sharing needles.

Since STDs are often spread when the infected person has no symptoms, most of the time a person cannot tell if someone has an STD. Additionally, people may not even be aware that they are infected and/or may not discuss it if they are.
