For patients over the age of 21, Restylane Refyne and Defyne can accomplish natural-looking facial rejuvenation around the nose and mouth. The XpresHAn Technology incorporated in both gels provides flexibility and movement that can keep smiles and other facial expressions looking natural.
Each of the products is specially formulated to treat signs of aging at varying depths of the skin. While Restylane Refyne is used to soften fine lines, mild wrinkles, and restore volume to the lips, Restylane Defyne is better suited for treatment of deeper creases and folds. Results typically last for a year.

Restylane Refyne and Defyne are injected into the skin to provide a plumping effect that smoothes wrinkles and restores volume around the nose and mouth. Before treatment begins with these products, a topical anesthetic is applied to numb the skin for added comfort. Injections with a micro-fine needle are then applied in the regions identified for treatment.
Restylane Defyne is injected to a deeper level of the skin to correct significant creases and wrinkles, while Restylane Refyne is injected more superficially to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Both formulas contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which helps prevent discomfort when the gel enters the skin. Once injected, the hyaluronic acid in these gels attracts and bonds with water molecules to enhance and maintain its volume.
Key areas commonly treated can include:
- Smile lines (nasolabial folds), which are wrinkles or creases that extend from the sides of the nose to the outside corners of the mouth.
- Marionette lines that descend from the corners of the mouth toward the chin.
- Wrinkles and creases around the lips.
Results with Restylane Refyne and Defyne can be instantaneous, though some temporary swelling, tenderness, and/or bruising may occur. There is no downtime associated with Restylane Refyne and Defyne injections, and many patients resume their usual activities immediately following their treatment session.
The unique structure of the Restylane Refyne and Defyne molecules help results remain flexible and long-lasting, with most results remaining visible for up to 12 months. We are careful not to overfill the treated areas in an effort to maintain subtle, natural-looking results. If you should desire additional enhancement following your primary treatment, a touch-up session can be scheduled to further perfect your results.
